Naturally Irresistible & Budget-Friendly
Living on the road doesn’t mean your pup has to miss out on wholesome, nourishing meals. This homemade dog food recipe is packed with fresh veggies, grains, and protein — and it’s super easy to prepare right in your van. Plus, it’s flexible based on what you’ve got in your cupboards or can pick up at the local market.
No strict measurements here — just nutritious ingredients, chopped small and cooked with love.

Why Make Homemade Dog Food?
- 🐶 Healthier than many commercial options
- 💰 Uses affordable ingredients, especially market leftovers
- 🌱 Great for dogs with sensitivities or food allergies
- 🚐 Perfect for van life – can be cooked in batches and stored

What Goes Into It?
Here’s what I usually include — but feel free to swap based on what’s available:
Base Ingredients
- Brown rice – good source of fiber
- Quinoa – protein source full of amino-acids-supports muscle development, tissue repair, and overall health
- A dash of olive oil – improves skin and coat health, immune system booster
Veggies (chopped small)
- Red pepper – good source of vitamins A & C
- Carrots – vision and immune system support
- Sweet potato – great source of vitamins A, C, and B6, as well as minerals like potassium, calcium, and iron
- Apple (seeds removed) – vitamins A & C
- Spinach (spinach should be given in small amounts as it also contains oxalates) – packed with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron, antioxidants, and fiber
- Broccoli – improve digestion, boost the immune system, and even helps with bone health
- 1 garlic clove (optional – use in moderation)
Note: Garlic is debated — a very small amount may offer health benefits, I have personally added garlic to all of my dogs’ diet as it helps erradicate any internal parasites.
Protein
- Whatever meat is available from the market — chicken, beef, fish, or scraps from your butcher (remove bones before cooking)
Boosters
- Chia seeds – great for omega-3s and fiber

How to Make It
- Cook the brown rice and quinoa in water until soft.
- Lightly steam or sauté the chopped veggies in a bit of olive oil.
- Cook the meat thoroughly, then chop or shred it.
- Combine everything in one big bowl and mix well.
- Let it cool, then portion into containers or serve fresh.
Storage Options:
- Store portions in airtight containers (fridge or cooler)
- Feed within 3–4 days
- Freeze extras if you have freezer space
